The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

A while ago I won a book in a competition and as we recently went away on holiday, I popped it in my suitcase just in case I managed to grab a few minutes to actually read (a girl can dream!) The book is the rather intriguingly titled The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, and I’m pleased to be able to report that I actually read some of it while we were away!

In all honesty, I only started it on the very last day, but I was more than half way through by the time we arrived home, which either speaks volumes about my speed reading or the readability of the book.

I actually think it’s the latter. Rob read this book during our holiday. Twice. Yes, it was so good he picked it straight back up again as soon as he finished!

It’s the tale of a bookshop owner, A.J. Fikry, and his interactions with a book sales rep, a child, and a policeman, as well as the wider community. There are literary links within each chapter, which you can either recognise or not – it doesn’t matter to your enjoyment of the book. Rob reported that it had quotes in, before I had picked it up to read, and he wondered out loud if you knew all the books cited you might think the story was better, but we’ll never know!

As a bit more of a reader than Rob, I did recognise more of the books mentioned, but what I appreciated more was the love of reading and books that came leaping off the page. This is a book about love, between people and the love of books. The characters are individual and quirky, and the narrative is warm and funny. I loved this book; the plot is interesting and the pace is such that you can sort of guess what might be happening but not too far in advance. There is also a twist to this story it’s definitely worth getting to the end for!

I love the sound of the literary links in each chapter and I’m intrigued to read the story after reading your review 🙂

I found you on Literacy Musing Monday. I’m glad you linked up so I could read about this book and add an interesting sounding read to my TBR list.

Sounds like a great read. Love one that just hooks you in and you are almost finished before you realise it (unless it means you get no sleep at night) #weekendbookclub
