Real Handful Healthy Snack Cookie Recipe

I recently discovered these packets of snacks called Real Handful. Apparently, Real Handful were set up after the owner/inventor, Joe, discovered trail mix while hiking in the Grand Canyon, and was inspired to create yummy blends of dried fruits, nuts and other delicious things. The packets are an ideal sized snack, and many afternoons since the beginning of May I have enjoyed a real handful of deliciousness.

One of Noah’s favourite things is dried fruit. If he’s hungry he very often will say “nom nom nom” and then get the bag of raisins, dates, or apricots from the cupboard in the kitchen in the most fantastic pre-speech clear communication ever. We are in no doubt what he likes and when he is hungry.

So when a Real Handful ration pack arrived in the post to try I knew I would have one enthusiastic tester. Noah was thrilled to discover different flavours in the portion I shared with him from the Blueberry Blitz pouch.

Soon we are heading to France in a daringly long all-in-one-go road trip from the north east of England. We are prepared with toys, DVDs, have polished off our best I-spy tactics, and organised our snacks.

Real Handful is a perfect snack for grown ups or supervised children. But they’re a bit fiddly and I have visions of the nuts and yoghurty bits escaping all over the car. And so I did a bit of biscuit making this afternoon and I have pleasure in presenting to you the Real Handful Blood Orange and Dark Choc cookie.


  • 50g butter
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 50g wholemeal flour
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • 80g porridge oats
  • One packet Real Handful of your choice (I used Blood Orange & Dark Choc) – if you want the nuts to go further between all the cookies, crush them up roughly before using


Preheat the oven (170’C). 

Mix the butter and sugar together with an electric whisk. Add the egg when soft and creamy, then whisk some more 

In a different bowl mix the dry ingredients together, then chuck the wet with the dry and mix together till combined. 

Drop a tablespoon of the batter on grease proof paper on a baking tray. If you want circles, use a cookie cooker as a guide to place your dough. 

Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. When they come out of the oven, leave them on the tray for a little while to cool a bit before transferring them to a wire rack. 

I gave Noah one of these after they’d cooled completely. He took one bite and then picked all the dried fruit out of the cookie! He knows what he likes for sure!

They are gorgeous, especially because the fruit has been soaked in juice before its put in the packet (probably it’s a LOT more technical than that!) so the whole biscuit tastes orangey and so so good! Random melty bits of dark chocolate in a warm biscuit…! I can tell, you’re in.

I’ve also got to say this – when you’ve two little kids you understand what tiredness is – the Mochaccino blend is the perfect afternoon pick me up. Do not feed that one to your children unless you want them bouncing off the walls until yon time. There are coffee beans in that Real Handful!
