Mother’s Day gifts – I really have found something for every type of Mum. These gifts are from awesome companies based in the North East of England. Support these local businesses and treat your mum!
Whether you’re spoiling her rotten with a really indulgent gift or looking for something small that says a lot, I’ve pulled together a helpful list of the things she’ll really want. Keep reading to find the perfect gift for your mum or partner (or are you buying a gift for your mother in law?).
This combines two things lots of mums like – candles and a hobby. Northumbrian Candleworks have created these candle-making kits. It’s a great feeling to be able to craft your very own beautiful and naturally fragranced candles to enjoy around your home. These soy candle making kits will produce two scented candle tins. They are so easy to make that if you wanted to you could get a kit for yourself and gift the candles to your mum. Kits available from £15.99.

If the lady in your life loves to take photos, why not help her use her “big camera” better by gifting a course by local photographer Gavin Forster? A two-hour lesson costs £40 if there are six people on the course, or a 1.5 hour one-to-one course is £100. Gavin also offers family photo shoots for £125. He’s offering a special deal at the moment of a framed 8×10″ photo included with the photoshoot for £140.
Walking tour of Newcastle upon Tyne
Based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Iles Tours is a guided walking tours company. They do a number of brilliantly informative tours of the city. All tours have a theme, like cultural, or historic, and will showcase the many things Newcastle and the North East has to offer. I know lots of mums who would love to join a walking tour to learn more about the region’s rich story and heritage. Tours cost approx £25 per adult. Gift vouchers are available.
A gift for the gin loving mum
Often named “mother’s ruin”, gin fell out of favour for a while but is now enjoying a massive revival. Micro distilleries are popping up all over the north east but my top recommendation is Poetic License, based in Sunderland.

Picnic Gin by Poetic License is a Strawberry and Cream Gin, something a little bit sweeter and extra special. It’s perfect for sunny afternoons when the little ones are playing (nicely!) and all natural! Bottles of gin from Poetic License cost approx £34.99.
A hot drink
And not just any hot drink. English Tea Shop have a selection of really yummy herbal teas including a chocolate vanilla tea that is so delicious. It contains real cocoa nibs for a really indulgent drink with no calories or guilt! Boxes of English Tea Shop tea cost approx £1.99 each.

Did you know there was a chocolate factory in Gateshead? Well there actually are two! Davenport’s chocolates is one of those north east chocolatiers, and they make flavours of chocolates that sound perfect for Mother’s Day. You can buy floral chocolate, or strawberry and champagne chocolates among many other yummy flavours…Don’t they sound divine? Even better that they’re from the North East and the brainchild of a mum of two Jane Williams.

Well, sort of reward stickers, but for mums. These are ace achievement stickers because every day being a mum where all fingers and toes are accounted for is kind of a winning day, right? Mums deserve to be rewarded for their achievements, no matter how big or small they are. These achievement stickers were drawn by an ultra talented local lass whose blog, Nelly’s Cupcakes, occasionally has her design works in, and lots of great commentary about things going on in and around the North East of England. Achievement stickers cost £3.50 per sheet and are available via the Punky Moms shop.
There are some really talented jewellers in the North East. Silver Splendore is based in Newton Aycliffe and makes fantastic pieces, often from old cutlery. Catwalk 100 make bold statement pieces of jewellery, which are available to buy from the Bowes Museum. Hanging by a Fred make unique pieces out of pieces of recycled climbing rope, and are from Northumberland.
But for personalised jewellery I think you’d be hard pushed to beat Smallprint jewellery. Fingerprints and footprints can be turned into totally individual pieces to treasure forever. Claire is the representative from the Newcastle and North Tyne, and her shop is bursting with gorgeous, personalised, silver jewellery.
The giveaway below ended on 5th March 2017. Many thanks to all who entered.
