Cookhouse & Pub Holystone Review – Kids eat for £1

Cookhouse & Pub Holystone Review – Kids eat for £1

We were invited to Cookhouse & Pub in Holystone to try their kids eat for £1 offer. The fantastic value deal runs from Monday to Thursday, 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Kids get two courses (either starter and main, or main and dessert) for just £1 with the purchase of an adult main meal. You can even add an extra course for just 75p!

We visited on a Monday evening at 5pm. The restaurant was bright, airy, and smelled clean. There were lots of other people eating on various tables, dotted around the restaurant, but the tables are well spaced so we didn’t feel squashed in or intruding on other guests at all.

The staff in the Cookhouse and Pub are fabulous; welcoming, friendly, and just the right side of attentive. We felt looked after right the way through our time there.

The boys were given vegetable sticks a few minutes after we sat down, as well as the menu, stickers, and crayons. The activities in the menu kept the boys busy until their food arrived, and were good for both of them.

What did we eat?

James chose sausage and mash, based on the fact it comes with gravy! Noah looked at the pictures in the menu (there are illustrations of a few dishes) and decided he wanted sausages with meatballs. There isn’t such a dish on the menu, but he was able to have chicken meatballs to start and sausage and mash for main course. Dreams can come true! The sausage and mash meal actually comes with a couple of slices of corn on the cob, but James wanted loose sweetcorn or no sweetcorn. We were appreciative of the way the kids’ demands were handled – really it didn’t seem any problem to accommodate them, and they were comfortable to ask for their meals directly to our server.

For starters, I picked soup of the day, which was mushroom. A good sized portion was presented with slices of bread and a generous pat of butter. Rob picked the classic prawn cocktail, which he said was lovely.

For his main course, Rob chose open beef wellington (£19.99) from the specials menu. There was a problem with the beef – the correct cut of fillet wasn’t available so he was asked if he’d be okay with a rib-eye instead.

I chose the salad (£6.49 or up to £9.99 with chicken, prawns or steak), and it was so delicious I’ve been trying to recreate it for my packed lunch at work. There we’re a few vegetarian options and one vegan burger.

I was so full from my soup and salad that I couldn’t contemplate a dessert but Rob insisted since he had his eye on two different options and wanted to taste them both. So… He chose half baked cookie dough (£4.59) and I had the salted caramel, brownie and popcorn sundae (£4.49). The boys chose desserts they could be creative with – James had an ice cream that arrived with a cone and sweets, while Noah had 3 mini doughnuts with chocolate sauce and sweets.

What did we think of Cookhouse and Pub in Holystone?

The staff, the environment and the food were all great. There was plenty of seating (some with single tables for business guests from the hotel nextround door) and the seating was varied to suit different occasions or preferences.

We thought the menu was great, with a load of foods we would like to try next time, but not so many options we were overwhelmed. The kids meals were delicious and great value at £1 for two courses or £1.75 for three.

We will be back, I’m sure, for an after school teatime treat!

Holystone is just down the road from Newcastle, and just off the A19. Well worth the trip, if you’re local or passing, and it’ll be a fantastic local for the new estate they’re building.
