Character Creative Oonies and Orbeez Review

Character Creative Oonies and Orbeez Review

We were sent the Orbeez and Oonies  Creative Kits from Character Options for the purposes of this review. With the weather turning a bit cooler and the nights getting darker sooner, these activities are fab for the boys. They allow them to be really creative and have fun without hours of tidy-up for me afterwards!

We tried:

Oonies Starter Station

Oonies are the inflatable mini balloons that magically stick together! Using the Oonies Inflator Starter Pack you can inflate Oonies then stick together to create an ooniverse of creations. It’s super easy and super fun! Just inflate them, stick them together and then decorate with Oonie Deco Bits! If you can think it, you can make it with Oonies! Make a variety of fun characters, create cool games and challenges, throw ‘em or even just pop ‘em.

Orbeez Wowster Surprise Magical Pets

In a faraway land of sparkles and wonder, millions of Orbeez bounced with each other. As the Orbeez swirled to the left and the right, some Orbeez blasted far way, some began to unite. They formed the magical Wow Worlds of glimmering friends, where no two were the same and all were best friends. They’re called Wowsers when they magically appear and bring love and good luck whenever they’re near.

With cute names like; Sunbeam, Pupagon, Jeanie, Flinny, Pip, Katterfly, Tweetheart, Darlin’, Cheeks, Sweets, you’ll be best of friends with these adorable creatures too!

Oonies

I saw these a while ago and thought they might make a good summer holiday game, but actually, they make a much better Autumn/Winter inside-the-house activity. They’re fun, in bright summery colours, and offer hours of screen-free play without (much) adult supervision. Straight out of the box, the machine is a fascinating bit of kit. I asked James what he thought it could be, and he speculated a sweetie machine or a painting kit. When I quickly read the instructions out loud and let him get puffing up the Oonies, James (6) was off inventing new characters immediately.

The Oonies starter set comes with brightly coloured pellets, some clear jelly-like rings to stick the inflated pellets together, and several different designs of jelly Deco parts. It is possibleto follow the instructions to make really cute little creations or invent your own!

Oonies machine

The age guidance on Oonies is for age 5+. Although the mechanism is completely safe and the needle that inflates the pellets can’t be accessed while the casket is open, there are many small parts.

Oonies fish

We enjoyed the Oonies starter set for several days after we opened it. The creations last for around five days before the balloon deflates. If it hasn’t popped then you can put it back in the machine and blow it back up!

At £19.99 available from Smyths and Argos the Oonies Starter Set is priced well and offers hours of screen-free play.

Orbeez

The Orbeez are like a blind bag, that even after unwrapping, there’s another surprise! When you peel off the wrapper, you still can’t see the pet inside, because the Orbeez inside the clear plastic ball obscure the view. Underneath the base section, there is a little key and a set of instructions to uncover how to see which Surprise Pet you’ve got.

We followed the instructions to take off the lid, remove the foil and then replace the lid.  There’s a removable section in the lid, through which you pour some water. As you pour, watch through the clear plastic ball to see your surprise pet appear! One of ours was upside down and floating around the ball when we unwrapped it, and obviously couldn’t do anything about it except pour the water out, and then fish around with my finger to pull the little toy out. I lost a few Orbeez in the process, and they bounced around the kitchen like tiny peeled grapes.

You can use the little key to make your pet dance and spin, which is something James particularly enjoyed. He also loved to take the little pets out with him for the day. The Pets learned Spanish, and went to the supermarket, but unfortunately, on the journey home, James suddenly started crying because he’d managed to fiddle the tail off his Pet! Upset wasn’t the word. So, be aware, these little Orbeez Creative Kits are very loveable!

Empty out the water carefully, and after you unscrew the lid you’ll be able to use the key to lift the grid and remove the pet. Now you can enjoy free play with your little Wowser Surprise Pet or place it on the base to showcase all your collection. As with most blind bag collectable toys, Orbeez come with a sheet with all the characters on, so you can find out the name of your pet, and find out if you’ve got the super rare Surprise Pet!

There are lots of magical surprises to be had with Wowser Surprise Pets! Unwrap, then just add water to reveal your surprise pet! Twist the handle, to make your pet spin. Then you can hide your pet by removing the water and wow your friends too! There’s lots to collect: Sprinkles, Happy, plus more!

Orbeez are priced at £5.99 and are available from Symths and Argos (and I’m sure I spotted them at Sainsburys too!)

Character Options have lots more creative kits for children to try out. They are ace for weekend play when the weather doesn’t allow for much outdoor time.

ah, littlest was looking over my shoulder as I read this review – she now wants these for her birthday – do you think if I watch her all the time they will be suitable for someone turning 3? (They do look cute) 🙂

It’s totally up to you, Vic, and you know your daughter best! The manufacturer guideline says 5+, while the EU guideline says 3+, so she could be in luck!
