Angel of the North

Angel of the North

I’ve lived in Newcastle upon Tyne (or very nearby) for the past 16 years this week. Sixteen years ago I arrived for Freshers week, and moved into halls at Northumbria Uni. It’s such a long time ago but it also feels like yesterday! I can still remember that feeling of excitement and nerves, happiness and sorrow.

However, I’ve lived here for all of that time, but until now never been to the Angel of the North! I remember laughing at Byker Grove one day because someone, feeling angst-ridden, went to the Angel for a mope. Like it was right next door to Byker. Not that Byker Grove is filmed in Byker anyway!

When I’ve seen it from the road it has symbolised being ‘in the North’, or ‘nearly home’ so I decided to correct the fact I’ve never been before.

It’s not as big as I thought it was. It was very busy, with literally coach loads of tourists arriving to have a look and pose at the feet.

James had a run around the area, enchanting Japanese tourists with his impression of the Angel, but mostly getting in the way of their photos!

“Arms out like the Angel!”

Good luck to everyone moving into Halls this weekend, and very best wishes to all starting university. You’ll be grand.

It really is huge, I can see why it attracts so many tourists, lots of lovely space to run around for children too, a lovely angel impression there from James. Funny how our uni days stay with us, I went to Reading and my eldest son has just booked to go to their open day as it is one of his options for next year studying Economics the same as me. I wonder if James will follow you? Thank you for sharing your trip to the Angel of the north with me on Country Kids.

His big sister (Rob’s daughter) is going to the same uni I went to, so already there is a ‘family’ trend. Who knows what James will do?! Will there even be universities then?!
